this is the atomuhr poetry guide site
andreas gryphius (1616-1664) german baroque poetryunfortunately we don't see any way to translate the content of the following baroque-poetry pages to english. they are about one of the greatest german poets ever: andreas gryphius, whose life (and poetry) was totaly influenced by the thirty-years-lasting-war (1618-1648) that for sure was the most horrible war that came across europe up to that point of its history. the war's cause were confessional differences between protestants and catholics. at the beginning of the 17th century 20 million people were living in germany, in 1648 10 to 14 million were left. the war and its consequences, famines, epidemics, the plague, had killed up to two thirds of the population of certain regions in central europe, like e.g in wurttemberg, mecklenburg, and thuringia. more than any discipline of fine arts, literature in germany became influenced by the confessional war and its horrors. german baroque literature, and especially gryphius' oevre is dark, gothic, horrible, strong - and much different from what one normally associates with baroque arts. No Louis-XIV-shit, we tell you.
atomuhr of brunswick loves gryphius,
as a matter of fact, we want him to be our song-writer.
